Prague Zodiac Chart

A birth chart projected onto the map of Prague.

Project name

Prague Zodiac Chart

An interactive map that lays the zodiac over the ground plan of Prague and, for a given date of birth, draws the planet lines across the city - showing which churches and monuments they pass through.

Description

Challenge: The Prague Zodiac Chart project builds on a cross of five Prague churches marking the solstices and equinoxes, and projects the whole zodiac onto the city's ground plan. Visitors wanted to see their own birth chart directly on the map of Prague, not just read about it.

Solution: We built a map application that anchors the zodiac wheel to the churches, centred on the Rotunda of the Holy Cross, over an aerial image of Prague. For a given date, time and place of birth it draws the planet lines and their intersections with churches, monuments and memorial sites. The map is embedded in the client's website and talks to the text interpretation both ways: clicking a planet in the text shows it on the map and vice versa.

Result: The map shows the charts of personalities linked to Prague (Charles IV, Franz Kafka, Václav Havel, W. A. Mozart and others) as well as visitors' own charts, followed up by guided walks through Prague. The site runs in Czech and English.

Data & tech

  • Map: Leaflet on ČÚZK orthophoto and base map (WMTS), switchable base layers.
  • Geometry: a zodiac anchored to the cross of churches, planet lines and their intersections with points in the churches, monuments and memorials layers.
  • Calculation: a server service computes planet and chart point positions for the date, time and place of birth; places are searched via GeoNames.
  • Website integration: the map is a standalone app (React, Redux) embedded in WordPress, communicating via postMessage.
